 Making Friends with Yourself

Exploring Self, Selflessness, and the Roots of Attachment

This program is for new and experienced meditators, please join us!

Every winter Pema Chödrön leads a retreat for the thirty residents of Gampo Abbey, her home in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. This is a unique opportunity to experience Pema's teachings from one of these retreats, which have historically never been made available to the general public. The series will include six 2-hour videos with a Shambhala teacher-facilitated discussion after each segment.

Join us for the whole series or drop in as your schedule allows.

In this series, you willl learn or refine your understanding of...

- The practice of shamatha (calm abiding) and open presence meditation,

- How the sense of self or ego evolves and functions, according to Buddhist psychology,

- How to lean into and fully experience the raw emotion of life's painful situations, rather than avoiding them, and

- Practices to help reduce the attachment, emotional reactivity, and suffering that arise from negative habitual patterns

Join Pema in this intimate setting as she explores, in her usual down-to-earth and practical way, the Buddhist teachings on the five elements and eight kinds of consciousness that make up our experience of the self, as well as the twelve links to the chain of causation, which reveal how we get hooked by our negative habitual patterns. These teachings get to the heart of how our sense of self develops and functions. Pema reveals how we can use them to transcend the negative patterns and attachments that are at the root of our suffering. Having seen through the self, we can proceed to live with limitless joy, wisdom, and compassion toward ourselves and al beings.

Please join us in exploring the Buddhist teachings that get to the heart of our suffering -- and that open space for limitless joy, wisdom and compassion toward ourselves and all beings!

The course includes:

- six two-hour videos of Pema teaching at Gampo Abbey

- teacher-facilitated discussions after each video, experienced facilitating teachers include: Lou Braun, Janet Ryvlin, Rachel Anderson, Kerry Schwartz, Shastri Joanne Martin Braun and Acharya Alan Schwartz.

- guided readings and practices to help you integrate the teachings into your everyday life.

The cost is $100 for the six-week series paid in advance or $20 per session at the door.

Patron Price is $150 for those who wish to choose to give directly to the Sonoma Center in support of this type of programming.
